Chapter 12

WHEN JANEY GOT BACK OUT to the car, she half expected Porter to be gone. She’d tried to play it cool, but she could see the panic in his eyes and figured his plan had been to bolt as fast as possible. Surprisingly, there he sat, like a statue in the passenger seat, staring straight ahead. She slid in and buckled her seat belt. When he handed her the keys, she acted like she didn’t hear them jingling because his hands were shaking so much. Whatever happened earlier really had him shaken up. Worse than she had ever seen him, other than maybe when he hurt his ribs the other night. She had to fight all of her instincts not to hug him and beg him to tell her everything, but she knew that wasn’t what he needed. Watching his leg begin to shake back and forth, she knew what Porter needed was a distraction. That way he could build his walls back up. Not that it’s healthy to have yourself blocked off from the world, but if you spent your whole life building walls it couldn’t be good for them to all be knocked down at once, and it looked like he was seconds away from falling apart.

“So this is the part where I pick a CD, and we turn it up so loud that we couldn’t even talk if we wanted to. Sound good?” When he nodded, she quickly reached for her favorite band’s newest release. She’d bought the CD at the concert Preston had taken her to. She planned on listening to it with him tonight, but since he was MIA and Porter was about to lose it, she figured now was as good a time as any.

As she put it in, she felt him staring at her, but she refused to say anything. If he wanted to talk it was going to be on his terms. She’d tried pushing him before, and it never worked. The longer he looked at her, the quicker his leg shook. Just as Janey turned up the first song and started to sing, he mumbled something. She quickly turned it back down. He must have known she hadn’t heard him because he went ahead and said it again. “Did you really just walk out of class?”

Janey laughed uncomfortably. “Yeah, I did. As soon as he said you’d left, I jumped up out of my seat and took off to find you.”

If Porter’s leg shook any harder it was going to fall off, but he was still staring at her with an odd look that she didn’t quite understand. Finally turning toward the window, in a whisper he asked, “Why?”

Not knowing what else to do, she pulled over and stopped on the side of the road. It wasn’t like there was any traffic, but she didn’t want to be distracted. “I don’t know. Just had to, I guess. I couldn’t just let you go, knowing you were upset I mean. I didn’t really think about it … at all.
